What is the Resource Center in Emeryville?
In 1997, a resource center was opened to serve Hickman students living in Alameda County. This resource center has a curriculum library and a staff who are here to work with local families. Students who enroll at the Resource Center in Emeryville are officially enrolled at Hickman Charter School in Stanislaus County. We encourage families to visit the main site and to participate in some of the major events there.
How does the program work?
As a home educator, you will be responsible for the daily teaching of your child at home. When you enroll your child, you will be assigned to an Education Coordinator (EC). You and your child will have regular meetings with your EC to plan your curriculum and to share your child’s progress. As part of this process, each month we will ask to keep samples of your child’s work – one each in math, science, social studies, and language arts, plus an additional writing sample.
What group experiences does the school offer?
On Wednesdays we have community events organized by our Alameda County Resource Center staff. In recent years we have offered field trips, family activity days, and class days at Live Oak Park in Berkeley. In addition to these free activities, we offer classes taught by our contracted outside vendors. Each student is given $600 per year to use toward these classes. If you use up all of your vendor dollars and want to take more classes, you may pay for them. As of 2019, families may use vendor dollars to buy supplemental educational materials and curriculum.
Will the school pay for my private music lessons?
We pay only for group classes. We do not pay for any kind of private lessons.
Do I have to use a set curriculum?
While, as a public school, we are expected to strive to meet California’s curriculum standards, we recognize that each student has his or her own learning style and strengths. Keeping this in mind, we offer a variety of curriculum choices in each subject area. Your EC is available to help you to choose the materials that best match the needs and interests of your child. Families enjoy designing their own curriculum and following their children’s interests.
Will the school pay for any curriculum materials I want?
We operate somewhat like a lending library. You may borrow any materials that we have, and you may also choose to use your vendor allotment to buy materials or curriculum that we do not provide.
What else does the school provide?
We always have basic supplies available, such as paper, pencils, art supplies, rulers, math manipulatives, and science materials. In addition our families have access to a variety of on-line resources, such as Mystery Science, Discovery Education, and ALEKS.
What about standardized testing?
As a public school, we are required to test all of our students in grades 3-8. Each spring, our staff administers, by computer, the CAASPP tests. We strive to provide a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere for students during testing.
Do I have to keep attendance records?
We need to collect attendance records from you each month in order to receive our funding from the state of California. We have a simple attendance form, which requires you to initial for any day when learning activities occurred. We do not track minutes of instruction, though we do ask you to agree to spend a minimum number of hours per week engaged in educational activities.
I have a child with special needs. Can we enroll?
If your child qualifies for special education, the law requires that the IEP (Individual Education Plan) team meet before you enroll, in order to determine whether this is the best placement for your child. Because our school is located in Stanislaus County, the majority of our Special Ed services are delivered there.
How do I go about applying?
First, you should fill out an Interest Application (available on our website). When we have an opening, we will call you. If we have more applicants than openings we will hold a lottery.
